A Comprehensive, Protocol-Based Approach at SHTERN DENTAL CLINIC

At SHTERN DENTAL CLINIC, we provide carefully planned dental care for patients with underlying medical conditions, complex medical histories, and older adults who may require additional medical consideration before, during, or after dental treatment.

We believe that appropriate dental care begins with understanding the patient’s overall health — not only the condition of their teeth.

Medical conditions, medications, previous surgeries and hospitalizations, allergies, cardiovascular health, diabetes, bleeding risk, bone health, immune status, mobility, and other factors may all influence the way dental treatment should be planned.

This is particularly important for patients living with one or more medical conditions and for older adults who may be taking multiple medications or managing several health conditions simultaneously.

Advanced age alone does not necessarily make dental treatment high-risk. However, older adults may have multiple diagnoses, take several medications, experience changes in mobility, or require additional considerations surrounding dental treatment.

Our guiding principle is simple:

We treat the patient as a whole — not just the teeth.

The Medical Questionnaire Is Only the First Step

Every patient is asked to complete a detailed medical history questionnaire.

But at SHTERN DENTAL CLINIC, we do not rely on the written questionnaire alone.

After the forms have been completed, the dentist personally sits with the patient and reviews the medical history again, carefully and systematically.

This is an important part of our clinical protocol.

The dentist asks additional questions, reviews current and previous medical conditions, discusses medications and allergies, and clarifies relevant details.

Why do we review everything again?

Because patients can understandably forget to mention a medication, diagnosis, previous hospitalization, surgery, allergy, or other medical event. Sometimes a patient simply does not realize that a particular medication or medical condition may be relevant to dental treatment.

The purpose of this second review is to minimize the possibility that an important medical detail is overlooked.

For older adults, a family member or caregiver may also assist in providing an accurate medical and medication history when appropriate and with the patient’s consent.

Every Medication Matters

We encourage our patients to provide an up-to-date list of all medications they currently take, preferably including medication names, dosages, and the reason each medication has been prescribed.

Particular attention may be required for anticoagulants and antiplatelet medications, cardiovascular and blood-pressure medications, diabetes medications and insulin, osteoporosis medications and other treatments affecting bone metabolism, immunosuppressive therapies, oncology treatments, corticosteroids, and medications that may interact with drugs used or prescribed in dentistry.

Even a medication that appears completely unrelated to dentistry may be clinically relevant.

Please do not decide on your own which medications are important enough to mention. Tell us about all of them.

Patients should never discontinue, start, or modify prescribed medication on their own in preparation for dental treatment.

When additional information or coordination with a physician or medical specialist is appropriate, this is determined according to the individual patient’s circumstances.

Did You Know? Supplements Matter Too

Vitamins, herbal products, and dietary supplements are also important parts of your medical history.

Many patients do not consider supplements to be “medications,” and therefore may forget to mention them. However, certain supplements may have clinically relevant effects or interact with prescribed medications.

Turmeric (curcumin) is one example. When taken as a supplement, particularly in concentrated or higher-dose formulations, it may affect platelet function and may potentially increase bleeding tendency — an important consideration particularly in patients who are also taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications.

This does not mean that every patient taking turmeric needs to stop it before dental treatment.

Never discontinue a prescribed medication or supplement solely because of an upcoming dental procedure without appropriate professional guidance.

The important message is simple:

When we ask what you take, please tell us everything — prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, herbal products, and dietary supplements.

Something that may seem completely unrelated to your teeth can still be relevant when planning your dental treatment.

Individualized Treatment Based on Current Clinical Protocols

There is no single treatment protocol that is appropriate for every medically complex or older patient.

Two people of the same age or even with the same medical diagnosis may require different considerations.

For this reason, treatment planning at SHTERN DENTAL CLINIC is individualized according to the patient’s complete medical history, current medications and supplements, present health status, planned dental procedure, and relevant clinical risk factors.

Our approach is guided by applicable professional recommendations, current medical and dental literature, and established clinical protocols.

Depending on the individual case, this may involve obtaining additional medical information, reviewing relevant investigations, taking additional precautions, modifying the timing or extent of treatment, or communicating with the patient’s treating physician or specialist when appropriate.

Prevention Comes Before Emergency Response

Our approach to medical safety begins before dental treatment starts.

Medical questionnaire → personal review with the dentist → medication and supplement review → identification of relevant medical risk factors → individualized treatment planning → appropriate clinical protocol.

These steps are designed to identify potential concerns in advance and allow us to prepare appropriately for each individual patient.

However, even with careful preparation, unexpected medical situations can occur in any healthcare environment.

For this reason, emergency preparedness is another important component of our clinical approach.

Emergency Equipment and Medical Preparedness

SHTERN DENTAL CLINIC maintains medical emergency equipment and supplies as part of our preparedness protocols.

Our clinic is equipped with:

  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Medical oxygen and oxygen-delivery equipment
  • Advanced respiratory support and ventilation equipment
  • Airway and assisted-ventilation equipment
  • Suction equipment
  • Pulse oximetry for monitoring oxygen saturation and pulse
  • First-aid equipment and supplies
  • Hemostatic materials and equipment for the management of bleeding
  • Emergency medications and supplies maintained according to the clinic’s applicable protocols
  • Rapid access to relevant patient medical information

This equipment provides an additional layer of preparedness in the event of an unexpected medical situation.

Emergency equipment does not replace emergency medical services or hospital-level care when these are required. Its purpose is to support an appropriate initial response while further medical assistance is obtained when necessary.

CPR Training Is an Ongoing Process

Medical emergency preparedness is not simply a matter of having equipment available.

Our clinical team undergoes CPR training as well as regular refresher training to maintain familiarity with emergency procedures and appropriate response protocols.

These ongoing refreshers help team members remain familiar with emergency procedures, understand their roles and responsibilities, and be prepared to respond in an organized manner should an unexpected medical event occur.

For us, preparedness means combining appropriate equipment, established protocols, and ongoing staff training.

Additional Support for Older Adults and Patients with Limited Mobility

We recognize that patient safety and comfort extend beyond medical diagnoses and medications.

Some older adults, as well as patients with certain medical conditions, may need additional assistance with mobility before or following dental treatment.

For this reason, a wheelchair is available at SHTERN DENTAL CLINIC for patients who require assistance with safe mobility, including after treatment.

Patients, family members, or caregivers are encouraged to inform our team in advance if mobility assistance or other accommodations may be required.

Have a Medical Condition? Let Us Know Before You Arrive

If you have an underlying medical condition, complex medical history, take multiple medications, have recently undergone surgery or hospitalization, are receiving oncology treatment, take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication, have a cardiovascular condition, diabetes, osteoporosis, a bleeding disorder, an autoimmune condition, or another significant medical concern, please inform SHTERN DENTAL CLINIC before your appointment whenever possible.

The same applies to older adults with multiple medical conditions, extensive medication lists, mobility limitations, or other special considerations.

Providing this information before the appointment gives our clinical team an opportunity to review the situation, determine whether additional medical information or documentation may be useful, and prepare appropriately for your visit.

If you are unsure whether a diagnosis, medication, supplement, previous procedure, or other health issue is relevant, tell us anyway.

We would rather know about every medication, supplement, and medical condition than risk overlooking information that may be important to your care.

At SHTERN DENTAL CLINIC, We Treat the Patient — Not Just the Teeth

Our approach combines:

  • A detailed medical questionnaire.
  • A personal, second review of the entire medical history with the dentist.
  • A careful review of medications and supplements.
  • Individualized risk assessment and treatment planning.
  • Current clinical protocols and professional guidance.
  • Medical emergency equipment and supplies.
  • Ongoing CPR training and refresher training for our clinical team.
  • Additional assistance for older adults and patients with mobility needs.

For patients with medical conditions and for older adults, careful dental care starts with understanding the complete medical picture.

Your medical history matters. Your medications matter. Even your supplements matter. Please keep us informed — preferably before you arrive.
